February 6, 2003: Tiny Ninja Theater, dedicated as always to its founding principle that "there are no small parts, only small actors," will return to New York on February 23 with the tri-state premiere of Tiny Ninja Theater presents Romeo & Juliet. Almost exactly one month later, a triumphant smile on its face, it will add to its repertoire the Off-Off Broadway revival of the critically acclaimed Tiny Ninja Theater presents MACBETH.
"I'm pleased to announce," announced director Dov Weinstein, looking pleased, "that the same actors who performed Romeo & Juliet in Charleston – the very talented Melanie Hipchikz and Chris Head – will be reprising their roles for the New York production. Some companies, when transferring a show to Broadway, would attempt to fill the title roles with big-name actors to boost sales. We're just not that kind of company. We don't know any big-name actors."
In addition to the young stars, Mrs. Smile will return to the stage with her oft-praised performance as Lady Macbeth. The versatile performer will also appear as Juliet's Nurse in Tiny Ninja Theater presents Romeo & Juliet. Will she be able handle the challenge of two such different roles? Probably.
Co-producer Jonathan Van Gieson remains adamant regarding the historical accuracy of the productions. "Shakespearian scholarship of the last 20 years, as well as the recent excavations of the Rose and Globe theaters, all point in one direction–" he said confidently, "to tiny plastic ninjas on a briefcase-sized stage. Or, in the case of Romeo & Juliet, an ironing board."
